Hearing Assessments
that paint the full picture.
A hearing assessment at Prairie Hearing goes far beyond a simple pass/fail screening. Our registered Hearing Instrument Specialist use a full battery of clinical tests to map your unique hearing profile, so every recommendation we make is grounded in precision.

What to Expect

Your assessment begins with a detailed case history where we learn about your listening environments, health background, and the specific situations where you notice hearing difficulty. Whether it's following conversation in a busy restaurant or hearing your grandchild on the phone, understanding your real-world experience guides every step.
We then conduct a series of diagnostic tests in our purpose-built sound booth, including pure-tone audiometry, speech recognition testing, tympanometry, and otoacoustic emissions when indicated. Each test adds a layer of understanding to your overall hearing health.
After testing, your hearing specialist walks you through the results in plain language, no jargon, no pressure. We explain what the numbers mean for your daily life and, if hearing loss is present, outline all available options so you can make an informed decision on your terms.
If your results suggest a medical concern, we coordinate directly with your physician or make an ENT referral. Our goal is always your complete hearing health, not just a device sale.

Why It Matters
Hearing loss often develops gradually. Regular assessments catch changes early, when intervention is most effective and lifestyle impact is minimal.
Even with normal hearing, an assessment establishes a personal baseline. Future tests can be compared against it to detect the subtlest shifts over time.
Hearing health connects to cardiovascular health, cognitive function, and social wellbeing. An assessment can reveal indicators that matter beyond your ears.
No two hearing profiles are alike. Detailed testing means any care plan is tailored specifically to your ears, your lifestyle, and your goals.
Whether results show normal hearing or areas of concern, knowing where you stand removes uncertainty and puts you in control of your hearing health.
We share findings with your family doctor and make specialist referrals when needed, keeping your broader healthcare team informed.

Common Questions
A comprehensive hearing assessment at Prairie Hearing typically takes 60 to 90 minutes. We never rush, your appointment includes time for conversation, testing, and a thorough results review.
No referral is needed. You can book directly with our clinic. However, if a referral has been made by your physician, we're happy to coordinate with their office.
We recommend a baseline hearing assessment for adults by age 50, with follow-up tests every one to two years. If you're exposed to noise at work, have a family history of hearing loss, or notice any changes, more frequent testing may be appropriate.
Assessment fees vary depending on the tests required. Many Manitoba health plans, veterans' benefits, and workplace insurance programs cover part or all of the cost. We're happy to discuss fees and coverage options when you book.
Absolutely. With your consent, we send a detailed report to your physician so your hearing health is part of your broader medical record.
