Never Go Without Your Hearing: Loaner Devices Available

If your hearing aid needs to be sent away for repair, loaner devices are available so you can keep hearing while yours is being fixed. A repair shouldn't mean a week or two of silence at the dinner table. Ask about a loaner whenever you bring a device in for service.

Professional Cleaning and Maintenance

Earwax and moisture are behind a large share of "dead" hearing aids. Regular professional cleaning keeps small problems from becoming repairs:

• Deep cleaning of microphone ports, receivers, and vents
• Replacing wax guards, domes, and tubing
• Checking and drying against moisture buildup
• Battery contact and charging check
• A listening check to confirm everything sounds as it should

Many issues that look like a broken hearing aid turn out to be a blocked wax guard or a moisture problem we can fix on the spot, often while you wait.

Repair or Replace? An Honest Answer

Not every ailing hearing aid should be repaired, and not every one should be replaced, either. Our rule of thumb:

• Repair usually makes sense when the device is only a few years old, still fits your hearing loss well, and the fix is simple or covered by warranty.
• Replacement is worth discussing when a device is well past its typical lifespan, repairs are becoming frequent, or your hearing has changed enough that the old technology no longer serves you.

How long does a hearing aid repair take?

Many cleanings and minor repairs are completed in-clinic, often the same day. Repairs that must go to the manufacturer typically take longer, and that's exactly when we can set you up with a loaner device so you're not left without hearing.

Does the Manitoba Seniors Hearing Aid Program cover repairs?

No, the program provides up to $2,000 toward the purchase of hearing aids every five years, but batteries, repairs, and replacements between claims aren't eligible. My hearing aid whistles, is it broken?

Not necessarily. Whistling (feedback) is often caused by earwax in the ear canal, a poor physical fit, or a worn dome or earmold, all fixable. Bring it in, and if the fit itself is the issue we can help through our hearing aid fitting service.

How often should hearing aids be professionally cleaned?

A professional clean-and-check every few months suits most wearers, alongside daily at-home wiping and proper overnight storage, more often if wax, dust, or moisture are factors for you. We'll show you an easy home routine at your visit.
